NEW COSMOS ELECTRIC CO., LTD.,(head office: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka City; President and Representative Director: Yoshinori Takahashi ), whose major goal is to "Eliminating gas accidents from around the world" be carrying out activities to save as many lives as possible from fire in conjunction with the "2024 Spring National fire Prevention Campaign" by informing people about the dangers of carbon monoxide during fire and countermeasures against it.

More than 10 years have passed since Residential Fire Alarms became mandatory and many homes have been installed, and there are concerns that in the future, there will be an increase in cases where the alarms will not work properly in the event of an emergency due to dead batteries or malfunctions. Also, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency White Paper, the most common cause of death in building fire is not burns, but actually "carbon monoxide poisoning and suffocation."

■ What is the Spring National fire Prevention Campaign?

This is a campaign implemented by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications with the aim of further spreading the idea of fire prevention as we approach the season when fire are more likely to occur, preventing the occurrence of fire, reducing the number of deaths, mainly among the elderly, and preventing property loss.

In 2024, the event will take place over seven days from Friday, March 1st to Thursday, March 7th, and one of the top priorities will be "promoting residential fire prevention measures," as the number of residential fire has been on the rise in recent years.

■How to maintain Residential Fire Alarms

The installation of fire alarm became mandatory for newly built homes in 2006, and in 2011 for all homes, including existing homes.
Residential Fire Alarms are powered by lithium batteries and have a battery life of approximately 10 years. When the battery voltage drops, a light and a "beep beep" sound will alert you. If you miss the alert, you can check the device's status by pressing the alarm stop switch (inspection switch) on the surface of the device. If the device sounds "normal", "beep beep beep" or a fire alarm sound is heard, then the device is normal. If the device says "battery low" or no sound is heard at all, the battery may be low or the device may be broken.

You cannot notice that a Residential Fire Alarms is broken while you are using it. For devices that have been installed for more than 10 years, there is a risk that the electronic components or sensors may be broken, so it is recommended that you replace the device itself rather than just the batteries.

■ Current state of fire and the dangers of carbon monoxide

More than 10 years have passed since the installation of Residential Fire Alarms became mandatory, but the number of deaths from building fire has been on the rise again in recent years (more than 90% of deaths from building fire occur in homes).
